Description
Philadelphia's historic Boathouse Row along the banks of the Schuykill River at night illuminated in pink during October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Located along Kelly Drive, the Victorian-style houses were constructed from the mid-19th century through the early portion of the 20th century. The houses and the Schuykill River serve as a national center for rowing, with several events (most notably the Dad Vail Regatta) being held annual along the Schuykill River. Many of the local universities (including Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, and LaSalle University) utilizing houses along Boathouse Row as a base for their rowing programs. In 1979, architectural designer Ray Grenald proposed placing lights on the houses to provide a "gingerbread" style look to the houses at night. In 1987, Boathouse Row was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.Since that time, the lights along Boathouse Row have become one of the iconic images of Philadelphia. Boathouse Row is located immediately upstream of the Fairmount Dam at the Philadelphia Art Museum, resulting in relatively calm surface waters along this portion of the Schuykill River. As a resulting, brilliant reflections of Boathouse Row's lights on the river are visible at night, as is seen in this photograph. This photograph was taken in October 2013.
