A wave crashes along the rocks as a surfer awaits for another wave at sunset near Poverty Beach in Cape May, New Jersey. In the distance, the light from historic Cape May Lighthouse is visible. Built in 1859 and standing at 157 feet 6 inches tall, the lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park in Cape May, New Jersey, the southernmost point in the state of New Jersey. It has served as a beacon at the entrance to Delaware Bay from the Atlantic Ocean for over 150 years. Interestingly, the lighthouse was designed by General George Meade, who was famously the Commander of the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Presently, the lighthouse remains active, with the United States Coast Guard maintaining its operation. The electric light is visible up to 24 miles out to sea. This photograph was taken during September 2013.
