Description
The leading edge of a previously severe warned thunderstorm rolls over a statue of Philadelphia Phillies Hall of Famer Steve Carlton outside of Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nicknamed "Lefty", Carlton was traded to the Phillies from the St. Louis Cardinals before the 1972 baseball season for pitcher Rick Wise. Carlton would quickly become the team's "ace" (best starting pitcher), go on to win 4 Cy Young awards (given annually to the best pitcher in each league) and help the Phillies win the 1980 World Series (the first in franchise history). During his 24-year career, Carlton won 329 games, 2 World Series and accumulated 4,136 strikeouts, which ranks 4th all-time in the history of Major League Baseball. Carlton is widely recognized as the greatest pitcher in the 130-year history of the Phillies franchise. Based on his exceptional career, Carlton was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994, receiving 95.8% of the vote during his 1st year of eligibility (to be elected during a player's 1st time on the Hall of Fame ballot is considered a special honor reserved for the truly elite of the sport). When the Phillies' new stadium (Citizens Bank Park) was completed for the 2004 baseball season, statues of 4 of the team's most prominent & recognizable Hall of Fame players (Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Robin Roberts, and Richie Ashburn) were placed around the stadium.
