Description
The early stages of development of a supercell thunderstorm near Kingfisher, Oklahoma on May 29, 2012. A supercell thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm with a strong, persisent rotating updraft. Evidence of the strong updraft is visible via the "cauliflower-like" appearance of the towering cumulonimbus clouds in the image. Later, when the supercell thunderstorm matured, it produced an EF1 tornado and hail up to 5" in diameter near Piedmont, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City.
