Artist's Description
The historic Cape May Lighthouse as seen at sunset. Built in 1859 and standing at 157 feet 6 inches tall, the lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, the southernmost point in New Jersey. It has served as a beacon at the entrance to Delaware Bay from the Atlantic Ocean for over 150 years. Interestingly, General George Meade, famously the Commander of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War, designed and oversaw the construction of the lighthouse. Presently, the lighthouse is still active, with United States Coast Guard maintaining its operation. The electric light at the top of the lighthouse is visible up to 24 miles out to sea.
